Kreativ Blogger Award
Sara from The Sharing Connection has nominated me as a Kreativ Blogger. Thanks Sara!
The tagline for her blog is A place to connect and share things learned in this journey through life.
Having just returned from an extended trip to Switzerland, she has been sharing some amazing photographs with her readers. And, her regular Monday post Story Photo Challenge always makes me think. She has a way of bringing out your playful spirit.
It was a challenge to come up with seven things about me that I thought would be interesting; things you might not have already read in memes and personal stories. But I have managed to come up with some new ones; we’ll get to that a bit later.
In the meantime I have chosen seven other bloggers for the Kreativ Blogger Award. I’ve been reading their blogs for a while now and thought it would be fun to get to know them a little better.
The nominees for the Kreativ Blogger Award are:
1. Lisa Newton at Travelin’ Local – From Los Angeles to San Diego and everything in between.
2. Stephen at Simply Stephen who promotes green, simple living.
3. Lori at Think Like a Black Belt, the website for physical, mental and emotional self defense.
4. Maya at ThinkMaya who blogs about frameworks for happiness and balance in life and career.
5. Barb at Over Coffee who is Taking a lifetime to see more, share thoughts, live fully.
6. Carla at Green + Chic who writes about natural, organic clean personal care products.
7. Stacey at Create a Balance, a life balance blog for moms.
Disclaimer: You seven Kreativ Bloggers are of course not obligated to participate… and even if you were, there is no way I could make you! And hey, I’m all for breaking the rules. Do you have to nominate seven other bloggers? Not on my watch. But then again, I’m sure they’d appreciate the links just the same.
7 steps to accept the Kreativ Blogger Award
To accept this award, these are the seven steps you are “supposed to” take:
1. Thank the person who nominated you for this award.
2. Copy the logo and place it on your blog.
3. Link to the person who nominated you for this award.
4. Name 7 things about yourself that people might find interesting.
5. Nominate 7 Kreativ Bloggers.
6. Post links to the 7 blogs you nominate.
7. Leave a comment on each of the seven blogs letting them know they have been nominated.
7 interesting facts about myself
1. I met Shirley MacLaine. I was a huge fan of hers way back in the early 90s. Her dancing and singing revue, Out There Tonight sold out during its American tour, but I was able to see it before that at the O’Keefe Centre in Toronto. I couldn’t believe I was being a “groupie” but there I was, FIRST in line at Stage Door. After ages of waiting, she finally appeared and was immediately swallowed up by the crowd. I stood slightly behind her, watching her sign autograph after autograph. When she turned to look at me I ask if I could have a hug. She handed her pen to her escort and we hugged. I practically floated home on cloud nine, star-struck. What is it about being star-struck anyway?
2. I have been living on the gluten-free diet for almost seven years. Living on this diet has become second nature, but I still miss going out for fish and chips or ordering pizza on a rainy Friday night.
3. I almost died when I was five. I had asthma and just before my fifth birthday I developed double pneumonia and the measles. I was in the hospital for a couple of weeks at least. The doctor told my mom that I had been delirious and was talking about bears. I had a bear phobia back then.
4. I did a Vision Quest in the early 90s (during my Shirley MacLaine phase). I spent three days alone in a tent, with no food or water, wearing nothing but a cotton wrap. I have no recollection of how I passed the time!
5. I worked for a Private Investigator over 12 years ago. I typed up special top-secret reports from their undercover surveillance cases.
6. My mother was married four times. My father was married twice. So, I have two stepsisters, two stepbrothers, one stepmother and three stepfathers. Phew! When and if I ever meet that special someone, my wedding will NOT be traditional.
7. Most people tell me I am pretty easy-going and a bit shy. However, when I get to know someone I can’t shut up. I can be pretty bossy sometimes too. Just ask my sisters.
There you have it. Now I have it all out of my system. It’s great to be asked to talk about yourself, cause that way you don’t appear too egotistical when you do. Or, have I spoiled that now?
Anything you care to share about yourself? Be bold!

Such interesting things about you…thanks for sharing! I look forward to exploring these blogs you highlighted. Congrats on your award!
Hi Davina,
Congratulations on your award. You’re well deserving of it.
I love the fact you worked for a private investigator. That had to have been an exciting job. I can only imagine what all he dug up on those he was spying on. Did you get to see any videos or pictures? Care to share? :)
And…meeting Shirley MacLlaine, that had to have been so awesome. Plus, you got a hug from her. Sweet!
Great news Davina about the award – congratulations.
Oh my a PI – I worked at the Sheriff’s Department in the women’s jail and dispatching…I got to see lots of the horrible videos that came in from PI s..not nice stuff – did you?
Shirley MacLaine, I am impressed. I don’t think I have met any movie stars.
Did all your siblings live in the same house at one time?
Very interesting and I liked learning all the new things…
Thank you
Hi Caroline.
Thank you. I hope you enjoy these blogs. They’re all doing a fantastic job! And, BTW… I see you too have been selected as a Kreativ Blogger. I’ll be waiting to read your 7 interesting things.
Hi Barbara.
Thanks! Sorry, no juicy details, videos or pictures from that job I had working with the PI. It was all pretty dry stuff actually. But I felt good to be supporting justice in some way.
I was thrilled to meet Shirley as you can tell. I met her again a couple of years later. We passed each other on the sidewalk. The only words I could manage were “Hi Shirley!” :-) She was in Toronto shooting a movie that time.
Hi Patricia.
I think you probably saw a lot more action than I did — no videos involved with my job — just scribbled notes that I had to transcribe. I can imagine yours was pretty intense.
Yep, meeting Shirley was a big deal for me. Huge! Holy cow, that would have been a crazy household; all my siblings there in one house. No, it was just me and my two sisters for most of the time. I moved out by the time my first stepbrother was 5. Lived with my dad for a short time with my stepmom and other stepbrother. Some of them haven’t met the others. And now we’re spread all across Canada.
Congratualtions… nice to see and read a peek a boo of you :-)
best wishes
Ribbon
ooops meant to read Congratulations, but I’m sure you got that … right?
Congratulations on receiving the award. And thanks for sharing about yourself! :) It’s great to learn more about you. And you picked some wonderful blogs to showcase by giving out the award to others. :)

Davina,
Congratulations to a Kreativ Blogger and thanks for your nice comments!!
Okay…your interesting things were very INTERESTING!!! Meeting Shirley MacLaine, working for a private detective, almost dying, and living with a very unusual family. WOW.
While I know you’ve mentioned being on a gluten free diet before. I didn’t realize it had been seven years (there’s that number 7 again)…that must have been quite a challenge when you started!
Last, but not least, I was fascinated by your Vision Quest. I can’t imagine what it must have been like to stay in a tent for three days with no food or water. I’m impressed. I think it shows that you are a strong person mentally and emotionally!
I’ll be visiting the seven sites you selected for the award:~) This is fun!!!

Hi Davina,
Congrats on your award and thanks so much for mine!!
I do not quite have as fascinating a life as you have had – and really – are you bossy?? :)
Do you remember your hospital stay at age 5?

Davina, such a creative way you presented all this! :) A private investigator, Shirley McLaine, a vision quest… You’re a woman who attracts excitement!
As for the bossing and sisters, you’re making me laugh out loud because my own sister and I think that being bossy surely is a sisterly requirement…? ;)

Congrats Davina! I love how the love is spread around the blogosphere!
And always fun to learn stuff about each other I think – especially when you “Get to know” the person a little through their writing and style!
Neat family story!
Now about the pizza and fish and chips, believe me you are so much better off without them. We have to look at not what we gave up, but what we got in return and I know your body thanks you a lot!
Nutrition is such an important part of our lives and yet most of us don’t give it the attention it needs – we really can be all-disease free, it just depends on what we choose to nourish our bodies with. (As you can tell this is a huge passion for me – so please ask if you ever have any Q’s when it comes to this :)

I’m so honored to be chosen by you for this award. I means a lot.
You’ve got some interesting facts about yourself. I know if it were me, I’d get all of those family member’s names mixed up. Sometimes, I still call my daughter by the wrong name and they’re all grown up. :)

Hi Davina,
Congratulations on this well-deserved award! You are awesome and creative, all wrapped up in one!
Love the facts you’ve shared – a glimpse more into “you”… and wonderful! The vision quest experiment…now, that sounds interesting. No bears, I’m guessing, on that campout!

Hi Ribbon.
Thanks. I got it! :-) I’ve done the same thing as you’ve done leaving comments. Part of the fun of blogging huh?
Hi Dani.
Thank you. These are all great blogs. I hope you have a chance to visit them if you’re not already familiar with them.
Hi Sara.
I’m still loving the picture you used for your Kreativ Blogger Award. It is perfect! :-) This is fun, I agree. Thanks again for choosing my blog as one of your seven. I was fascinated by the fact that you still have your grandfather’s bugle from the Spanish American war.
Hi Maya.
Thanks. I bet your life IS fascinating. I’d love to hear your seven picks! Um, yes I really am bossy. Really.
Hi Vered.
I remember some things about the hospital stay. I would be woken by the nurse in the middle of the night while she added more ice to the whatever it was at the back of the oxygen tent. But that’s about it.
Hi Betsy.
Oh ya, step families! The ladder to heaven? :-)
Hi Julie.
You’ve made me laugh now. You’re absolutely right. Being bossy IS a sisterly requirement. Silly me :-)
Hi Evita.
It is great to read about the people who write behind the blogs you read. And I’m reminded now that you started this whole thing when you awarded Sara with her Kreativ Blogger Award. Methinks I have to pop by your blog and read your list of seven.
Thanks for your input re nutrition Evita. You are right you know… this diet has been a blessing in disguise.
Hi Lisa.
I’m looking forward to reading your seven things. I guess you’d be in trouble if you’d had twins eh? :-) I bet your daughter knows you are talking to her anyway even if you mix the name up. We women have a knack for that sort of thing.
Hi Lance.
Thank you. You are very good with words :-) Thankfully there were no bears in sight on that Vision Quest, nor were they on my mind either. Good thing.
Interesting. I asked, because I think these things are often far more traumatizing for the parents than they are for the kids.
Vered – MomGrind´s last blog ..Friday Links
I enjoyed all of this, Davina – especially the glimpse of you in the photo. I wondered when you mentioned fish and chips if you were living in Britain, then you wrote ‘mom’. Do you live somewhere that has takeaway fish and chip shops? My favourite bit was about your family – mind boggling dynamics! What’s Christmas visiting like? Vered’s question brought back memories for me, too. All I remember from getting my tonsils out aged 5 or 6 was eating jelly and refusing blancmange.
janice´s last blog ..Take Time to Treasure What’s Important
Hi Vered.
You’ve brought up an excellent point here. As a kid I had no idea what this was doing to my mother. I know she went through hell sometimes; she had to learn how to give me an adrenaline shot when I had an asthmatic attack. We lived a good half hour from the hospital so she had to play doctor.
As I grew up I came to realize what this must have been like for her. Before she died we had a lovely chat about “things”. I told her how much I appreciated how she had taken care of me. Thank you Vered for adding this to the conversation. I’ve never had children myself, but with you being a mother, I can see how you would have this on your mind. I hope you never have to go through anything like this with your children.
Hi Janice.
There is a takeaway fish n chip shop by the beach near my apartment. I drool over everyone’s orders. Sometimes I cheat and have french fries (not supposed to have them if they’ve been fried in the same oil as battered items). There haven’t been any family Christmases for many years. My family lives on the east coast and we don’t travel much; plus we’re not a “cozy” family anyway. Now I have my brother living in town so that will change this year :-)
I remember hearing about kids getting their tonsils out and seeing some of them eating jello. I was glad it wasn’t me :-) I hear that is painful but better to have done when you’re young. Now you have it over with! I just Googled blancmange since I’ve never heard of it before. It sounds yummy, but there is a lot of sugar in it. Probably better you didn’t eat it.
Cool – you’re a secret agent!
Well, close enough.
Thanks for sharing. I like to learn a little more about the people I see online. It brings a little realism to all the 0s and 1s my computer brings me.

Hi Relax.
Go go winners! Go go bloggers — they’re all excellent. Congratulations are always welcome. Thank you.
Loved the Shirly MacLaine story – a hug! And interesting to hear about the other things – that’s an unusual family set-up you have! You are definitely coming across as very egotistical – just kidding – R

Robin´s last blog ..An Eventful Month
Hi Davina,
Sorry to be late to the party, but I found myself overloaded in garage sale stuff, and the accompanying dust from 9 years of storage was a killer.
Thank you so much for thinking of me with this award! And how nice of you to open up to your readers with the seven interesting things. Gluten free is tough — kudos to you! A Vision Quest and working for a Private Investigator? How fun! The only star who left me ga-ga when I lived in Aspen was Leonard Nimoy, but I’m a Star Trek fan. Bear-phobia? Too much Goldilocks reading back then?

Davina,
I think it’s so cool that you once worked for a PI. I’ve always wondered at the intriguing secrets PIs are paid to uncover, and you got to read all about it!
Love the picture too, where you super-imposed yourself onto your avatar in the background. Brilliant!
Daphne @ Joyful Days´s last blog ..Your 24 Possible Personal Strengths
Hi Robin.
So nice to “see” you again :-) Shirley MacLaine… I know! And it feels just like yesterday. Yes I recognized the eye similarity as soon as I saw the picture beside Jannie’s CD cover; was completely accidental. Don’t think I could do the Jannie singing thing though – ha, ha.
Hi Lori.
You are welcome — I look forward to reading your 7 things, not to mention your new ebook (very soon) — that is worthy of a Kreativ Blogger Award in itself. Tis the garage sale season isn’t it? I say once a year is enough… but I don’t mind going to other people’s garage sales.
Hi there Daphne.
It was pretty interesting working for the PI — being privy to confidential information and all. Nothing major but still, interesting.
Glad you liked the picture. I was having an “unpretty” day, so sharing only one eye was all I was comfortable with :-) And, the avatar is a portion of a lovely wall hanging that hangs in my living room. It’s a painting done on fabric and is of two people doing a fire dance. If you’re curious to see the whole thing, pop by my old blog Loving Pulse — I used a photo of the entire wall hanging for “The Fire’s Dance”.
Hey, how did I miss this post?? I LOVE Shirley MacClaine! As an actress and off-screen too. Ah, how nice to have hugged her!
Wow, no recollecition of how you passed those 3 days? But did you get a vision??
btw, did you paint that? I’m assuming you did, eh? And of course, I recognize it as your Gravatar.
You iz super-cool!
Jannie Funster´s last blog ..Like a bord on a wire, 9
Hi Jannie.
Shirley MacLaine rocks! And no I had no recollection whatsoever of how those 3 days passed. I sat outside a lot and napped; it wasn’t boring either. No vision though — I wondered if someone would ask that question, lol. I did almost get my Cherokee “medicine name” because of it, but not quite. I dreamt parts of the name in a dream.
You is way cool too Jannie. I didn’t paint that wall hanging but it is one of the favourite things I “own”.
“I almost died when I was five.” OMG, that’s horrible, glad you’re still here with us.
hmm, what can i share about me. be bold? well i don’t have anything bold, but even in this day and age i enjoy when a man holds the door, stands when a lady enters the room and i think it looks weird when a see a woman driving a man around….in a car. i like for the man to drive. go figure?
Natural´s last blog ..Why Wait, Buy Now!
Hi Valerie.
Good to “see” you. You ARE bold without even trying. Every post I read of yours — your humour boldly goes where no man has gone before :-)
Me too! I appreciate chivalry. Now that you mention it, when I visualize a woman driving a man… it does seem odd. What’s up with that? And standing when we enter the room… I’d feel like a Queen.
I am in awe of how beautifully you write. It was so spell bounding. Then all the wonderful comments and additional insights from so many people. I felt I just opened a gift. Things have turned around now…now we’re all waiting outside your stage door hoping to get a hug. Congratulations, well deserved! I wish I could rub shoulders with you and just have a second of your light.
