Going with the flow
Today I’m setting sail on a ferry very similar to this one, for a 5-night stay on a tiny island just off the coast of West Vancouver. I’m unplugging for a few days — trading in those online activities for some quiet time.
I’ve talked myself out of bringing my laptop with me, even though this bed and breakfast does have Internet connection. I know what would happen if I did bring it. First thing in the morning it would go on and next time I’d look at the clock it would be the end of the day. Well, that’s exaggerating a bit, but it seemed like a creative thing to say, given the title of this post.
So that means, no blogging and no Twitter — yikes! Good thing the full moon has passed, cause if you were to hear any howling it probably would have been me going stir crazy without the Internet. So what will I do instead?
I’m gonna:
Breath deeply. Do yoga. Eat lots of yogurt and granola and english muffins (gluten-free of course) with peanut butter — real yummy with a good cup of coffee.
Sleep in. Take long hot baths. Take my new hiking shoes hiking and pray that I don’t get blisters. Yep, band-aids are packed — check.
The hiking will take me around Killarney Lake, a two-hour jaunt, and I will climb to a rocky plateau to take in the spectacular view over Queen Charlotte Channel. This is my favourite spot. I discovered a secret hideaway that not too many people know about. One summer afternoon I sat on the edge of the cliff for hours without seeing one person. What can I say; I love my quiet time.
If I’m feeling particular perky, I will take the six-hour Mount Gardner hike to take in more spectacular views. Maybe I’ll even run into Harrison Ford on one of the trails. I hear he has a place on the island. Now that would be tweet-worthy! Hmm, maybe I should bring the laptop after all.
Will most likely see deer as they frequently hang out in residents’ backyards. And if I’m lucky I’ll see an owl again. While hiking around Killarney Lake a couple of years ago, I just happened to look up into the trees and there was an owl, staring down at me. We had a telepathic conversation for about 10 minutes, until my neck got sore. I introduced him to anyone who passed by.
I’ve packed my camera, a new sketch pad plus some fancy artist’s pencils and “professional” erasers; cause I make professional mistakes.
I’ll be journalling the old-fashioned way with pen and paper. And there’s even a book that found itself being slipped into my backpack that I just might read.
Of course there will be red wine with dinners. And later, tea with chocolate biscotti (gluten-free again) — expensive treats for a deserving woman.
Oh, and I’ve been drooling over a box of Guylian chocolates all week. Bought them cause they were on sale — a whole $3 off — and I can’t believe I HAVEN’T opened them yet. They’re coming with.
If it is raining, I’ll have a nap in the hammock chair on my own private patio. And lastly, there is a choice of three beaches that I can walk to for a view of the sunset.
This is an actual shot of this island basking in a sunset. At the end of the day, there is nothing better than a good sunset.
I’ll see you guys in about a week. Maybe when I get back I’ll post some of the sketches. Maybe.

Excellent idea about not bringing the laptop! More recently, I find that even if I do bring one along with me on a holiday, I can go on days without logging onto the web. This is what I call: freedom!
Have fun! Love to see your sketches!

Hi Davina,
How exciting. Your vacation sounds like it will be fabulous. Unplugging from technology is a smart choice. As you know, we’ll all be here when you get back, waiting to hear all about the trip. And, maybe even seeing a sketch, or two – Yeah?
P.S. I’ll miss you on Twitter.

Have fun on your trip. I felt a little jealous because it really sounds like something that I could go for right now. How I dream about the day I could get away from all this technology. I’ve never been to Canada but I bet this is becoming the best time of year to see its natural beauty

Wow what a vacation. I love it all the hiking, no computer, the sketch pad and chocolates. Does it get any better than that? Oh and words can’t describe the sunset! Enjoy:)
Hi Davina — I particularly enjoyed hearing about the telepathic conversation with the owl, and I get that you’re going to do a lot of playing and how important that is to you.

It’s not a vacation if you’re online; it’s only a change of scenery. SO glad you decided against the electronics!! :) So, I’m hoping you have a scanner so we’ll be able to see your drawings. They’re bound to be as delightful as your poetry!

Just looked up some images of Queen Charlotte Channel and it looks beautiful.
ha ha! hope you are enjoying your time away …relax and refresh in that delightful place…

Hi Carla.
Thank you… I’m gonna.
Hi Betsy.
I will and I did :-) Thank you. The doctor is in again – ha, ha.
Hi Dani.
Thanks. It was fabulous. If you’re ever out west, I highly recommend this Bed & Breakfast.
Hi Vered.
I am REALLY glad I didn’t take my laptop. I would have missed out on so much!
Hi Barbara.
Thanks :-) I did miss playing on Twitter while I was gone. I tried to find an Internet cafe one day while in town… JUST to tweet a hi to everyone. But alas, there was no Internet cafe to be found. I will be blogging about some of my experiences on the trip though… even sharing a sketch. Not a very good one though.
Hi Dot.
You’re right you know… I think I was already in the mood. I’d been waiting anxiously for this vacation.
Hi Liara.
Thank you — I did savour a couple of sunsets and one REALLY rainy day. The rain was torrential and awesome!
Hi Stephen.
Thank you. When you’re talking about BC ANYTIME of year is good to see its natural beauty. Unbelievable. I highly recommend this B&B if you’re ever out this way. It was very difficult to return to the city.
Hi Robin.
Um… well, the choccies are all gone now. But there’s always more to be bought right? I took a ton of photos and will be sharing some stories on my blog. I have over 30 pages of journal notes that I’m sifting through and am looking forward to some good storytelling.
Hi Tess.
You SHOULD stay at this place Tess! It was one of the best experiences of my life. I felt like I was living in a dream — so surreal — even now that I’m home. Only 1 thing could have made this EVEN better and I hope that next time I return, I will have that 1 other thing. If I don’t… that still won’t stop me :-)
Hi Chris.
Have you ever looked at a real live owl? They look right deep inside of you. It gives me chills (even now when I’m typing this).
Hi Hilary.
It was BLISS, BLISS and more BLISS. I will be back there, you can count on that! It’s a pretty special place.
Hi Julie.
I can’t tell you how glad I am to have not brought the laptop with me. I was enraptured with the B&B and the laptop would have pulled me away from that. don’t have a scanner, but I took a picture of the one and only drawing that I did. It’s not all that great, but it will be making its debut on my blog in the next couple of posts.
Hi Cath.
I didn’t see Harrison Ford — too bad. He’s in my top 5 list of favourite actors. This place is beautiful and I have a feeling you would enjoy the B&B. It is SO quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Hi Patricia.
Thank you. I DID enjoy the time away. You aren’t too far from BC. If you ever decide to come up to visit I would suggest Island Thyme Bed and Breakfast. I’ll be blogging about it so you’ll hear about it firsthand.
Hi Evelyn.
Well you have more self-restraint than I do. If my laptop had been near I would have given in. “Oh just one quick look to see what I’m missing.” And there would have gone the day. What IS your secret?
Well, this is fun, going back chronologically through your posts. I’ll be right there with you Girl, every step of the Killarny Lake way.
Will you have glimpsed Harrison Ford, or talked to hm or had him asked you out after telling you he’s dumped whats-her-name? (Is he still with Calista? I’m so out of the celebrity loop.)
Will you once again commune wth the owl? And will he introduce you to his buddies this time? Has he put on weight?
Will you scarf your bargain Guylians in one fell swoop or dole them out slowly to you and Harrison?
Will you end up buying a slice of carrot cake full of moldy walnuts but leave the waitress a good tip, anyway?
Will you break down and beg some cafe goer to use their laptop?
Ooo, this is so exciting!
On to your next post.

Hi Jannie.
I’m loving your questions :-) Hey this way you’re not left hanging like some readers who had to wait for each post to be published. I don’t know if Harrison Ford is still with Calista or not. I don’t follow celebrity gossip either.
The Guylians, I’m surprise to say, lasted me right till the last night. I had 6 left and I actually forced myself to eat the rest just so I wouldn’t have to carry them home. My tastes have apparently changed. It’s like I’ve morphed into a new person.
