Put the Message in the Box

World Party sings it

Listen here:

And if you listen now
You might hear
A new sound coming in
As an old one disappears
See the world in just one grain of sand
You better take a closer look
Don’t let it slip right thru your hand
Won’t you please hear the call
The world says

(CHORUS)

Put the message in the box
Put the box into the car
Drive the car around the world
Until you get heard

Now is the moment
Please understand
The road is wide open
To the heart of every man
A few simple words
So a mule could understand
He don’t want tomorrow
If it’s just crumbling into sand
Won’t you please hear the call
She says

(CHORUS)

Until you get heard
The world says
Give a little bit
Give a little bit of your love to me
Cos I’m waiting right here with my open arms
Give a little bit
Give a little bit of your soul to me
Cos I’m waiting to behold your many charms
Is that love in the air?
She says

CHORUS

Unwrap your message

This song was released almost 10 years ago and until about a week ago, I had never heard it.

After listening to this countless times, I could probably sing this song in my sleep now. It gets to me and it’s hard to explain how.

Maybe that’s a good thing. I know from my personal experience, when I CAN explain something I can easily forget it or take it for granted. I put my explanation in a box and store it away while I go in pursuit of the next question and answer adventure.

Perhaps that’s why I’ve listened to this song so many times. It’s the experience of the listening and not trying to figure out what it means that moves me. Just being with it and letting it sing to me. Letting it unfold.

When I listen to this song and sing the lyrics I feel that everything is okay just as it is. I visualize myself driving my car around the world with no worries about where I will sleep or where my next meal will come from.

I feel connected to that little girl who had just been laid into the back of the family station wagon at 5 am on a cold, foggy morning; ready to make the long drive with her sisters to the Canadian National Exhibition. Off on an adventure.

And what’s interesting about that when I reflect back on the memory; it is like there was nothing to put in the box. It was more about letting it all out of the box.

What are you taking out of your box for this coming year? I’m sure you’ve already packed a lot of goodies in there that you’ve forgotten about. What message do they have for you?

And if you listen now
You might hear
A new sound coming in
As an old one disappears…

Thank you for sharing YOUR messages over this past year. I’ve delighted in each and every comment.

Season’s Greetings to all of you and all the best for your upcoming year. Thank you for being YOU.

“It was more about letting it all out of the box.” — I agree with this. Sounds like the blogosphere and why we’re here.

Thank you for your posts, insights, and sharing this year!

Hi Lori.
We do let a lot of “things” out of the box… I mean blog ;-) Cheers to you!

Isn’t that the BEST song. I too was unfamiliar until just now and I think I could get to singing it in my sleep too.

For me what’s getting out of the box — or actually is going into boxes is a lot of stuff around that needs to all go to one of 3 places…

– given away
– stored away
– tidied away

for me outer work frees up my inner flow. If that makes any sense?

Merry Christmas,Davina! It’s been a real treat to become your friend and read your fine writing over the past year.

I really like this song. I am surprised, I have never heard this song before. The band has a great name too. A real catchy tune. I never try to analyse a song, just enjoy it. Music can be so important in one’s life.
My box is so full and cluttered. It really needs a thorough cleaning before spring. Thank you for finding this song.

First loved the art and then listened to the song. I’ve been thinking about going back into professional speaking after being hired 5 times without trying. If I do that’s exactly what I feel like I do…I put my message in the box, put the box into the car, drive around and be heard.

What stops me is there is already enough speakers blah blah blah…and then when I hear “the world” it reminds how big the world is and there’s enough room for all to be heard! So the thought goes on…

Hi Davina – I hope you’ve had a lovely Christmas. I’m impressed that you blogged on Christmas Eve. I had hoped to do a post today but the kids hi-jacked the laptop for the last couple of days.

What a great song. I also agree it was more about letting the message out – kinda of like when you put a message in a bottle in the hope that someone will see it.

Hi Jannie.
“Outer work frees up your inner flow” — makes TOTAL sense! To me this means that by doing this “outer work” your mind is busy working on other things, while the creative self can percolate. I’ve appreciated your continued visits and FUN comments over this past year Jannie. :-)

Hi Jim.
Glad I found this song. I’m surprised that you haven’t heard it before. You have a huge music collection. Good luck cleaning out your boxes. Bet you’ll find some neat things you’d forgotten about.

Hi Corinne.
Welcome :-D Thanks for your comment. Happy New Year to you.

Hi Tess.
I agree; there are a lot of speakers out there. But… no speaker is like you, right? What’s neat is that you could give the same speech as someone else, but people would connect to it differently.

Hi Cath.
I had a low-key Christmas with my brother. I hear you have snow this year in the UK. That is the one thing that is missing here. This was a pretty easy post; I’d been considering it ever since I discovered the song. It kind of wrote itself, once I got moving on it.

Just like you, when I heard this song I thought of “putting the message in a bottle”. You’ve reminded me of the Matryoshka doll now. Letting the message out, to put it in the box to be received by another… and so on. :-D

Hi Davina .. thanks – I’d never heard the song before .. I loved the words .. especially

Great combo – the art – the song! The words are compelling – don’t think I know this song but I sure love the words. What I’m letting out of the box is pretty much my blog – crazy variety of stuff I write about – and what is in store for 2010 is finishing my book and bringing that out of the box and into the light of day. You’ll hear me hooting and hollering about that for sure!
Wishing you all the best of peace and happiness and just pure JOY for 2010!

Hi Hilary.
You’re welcome. The words of this song are so simple, yet there is “something” that goes beyond the words. Yes, we definitely need to make the most of time; we spend so much of our time trying to control it rather than enjoy it. Or maybe it’s just that we enjoy “control”??? Cosmic joke :-)

Hi Vered.
You’re welcome! All the best to you and your family, and your blog in 2010.

Hi Rose.
Time to take inventory? Actually, I have $100 that I keep in a box. Don’t ask why… it’s a long story :-)

Hi Suzen.
Welcome! :-D Isn’t that art gorgeous! I was really excited when I found that one. It was JUST what I was looking for.

Wow, I can feel the excitement behind your words about your book! I think you’re already hooting and hollering. Don’t stop! :-D

Hello Davina!

Oh this was so special and beautiful! The photo and the song lyrics are just great. The vivid colors set the mood and made me feel great before I even read the lyrics!

And I couldn’t agree with you more….so often we get caught up in putting more into our life, when in fact so often it is more powerful to just release!

I want to wish you a very, very happy and healthy new year! Thank you for all your wonderful comments on my site and just for being the uplifting and inspiring You! I am off for some much needed holidays…so I will be back in touch in the New Year!

Hi Davina — thanks for asking the question — it’s given me some clarity about some spices I’m going to throw into the mix this year. I’m going to give my music more exposure on my blog and elsewhere, and there’s definitely going to be another book on a slightly different theme. Happy New Year!

18 patricia 12.31.09 at 12:09 pm

Davina,
I have not heard this song and I really enjoyed learning about it – I only listen to instrumental music when I am writing…because I have to stop what I am doing to listen to the words – having them printed out is wonderful…I can enjoy it in dimensions.

Thank you for all your wonderful out of the box writing this year and for all the connections we have made – you are a talented writer and editor…your ideas come out of the box with such expression…and pull me right in…Thank you.
Wishing you the right magic in the new year, great health, and the flow of expression…like the child in route to the fair…
sending you hugs and lots of wishes come true…

Davina — I love the play on words in this post. The song is great, but the title, PUT THE MESSAGE IN THE BOX, made me immediately think about the comment box and all we share in it. There are so many gifts in comments.

While I love writing, reading people’s comments at both my site and others is always enlightening. For example, reading the comments for post has taught me a lot. I learned that:

Chris plays music (I look forward to hearing it on his site in 2010)
Patricia likes to listen to instrumental music when she writes
Evita is off on a holiday
SuZen is about to publish her book and perhaps show off her new site???? Rose is very good at writing titles that make you want to read her post Vered always writes kind and gentle comments
Robin is thinking about you and sending you happy thoughts
Both Hillary and Jim loved the words to song
Cath will soon have to wrestle her laptop away from her hi-jacking kids
Tess might return to professional speaking, something I didn’t know she did
Jannie’s outer work frees up her inner flow; no surprise as she’s always busy!
Corinne visited your site for the first (but not the last)time!
Lori has a free self-defense e-book that I now want to download.

Most of all I learned that you ALWAYS think about your readers and remember to appreciate them. You are one of the special ones in the blogoshere. You are a heart-center — sending out gentle warm energy to all of us. And I thank you for your posts and this special box you’ve given us to share in.

I hope you have a very happy New Year and I look forward to visiting in 2010:~)

Hi Chris.
You’re welcome. Sounds like 2010 is ramping up for you. Another ebook; that’s exciting, and I’m interested to hear your music too. Happy New Year.

Hi Patricia.
I’ve enjoyed connecting with you this past year too. You have an encouraging and gentle way with words and it shows here in your comment. This is like poetry :-) Thank you. All the best for 2010.

Hi Sara.
You’re right, that IS a good play on words. I love how you’ve taken the time to read the other comments and mention them in your comment. You’ve almost made me blush here — thank you for such wonderful thoughts. :-) Warm thoughts to you to ring in the new year.

Hi Liara.
I appreciate you. :-D

Hi Davina
Came over from John Hoff’s site… interesting site you have here.
Liked your comment:
“It’s the experience of the listening and not trying to figure out”

Reminded me of learning to ski where the advice was to relax and listen to your body, let your body learn, don’t interfere with what we do naturally.
The quotation that went along with that form of learning was:

“The centipede was happy quite, until a toad in fun said “Pray, which leg after which?” That worked her mind to such a pitch, she lay distracted in the ditch, considering how to run.”

The other memorable phrase was “Some things can be learnt, but not taught.”

It works for me!

Hi Keith.
Was just over to your blog; I love the design. Much better looking even than this Thesis theme. Granted, I need a header design, but your website is fantastic looking. I like the centipede quotation you’ve shared here! It’s SO perfect to illustrate your point.

Appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment and a learned comment.

I liked your column. The best things are by serendipity. I placed my plate on the kitchen counter. It still had some spaghetti sauce on it. I was quickly going to boil some water to make some more pasta. I was still hungry. I heard a banging in the kitchen. I had to laugh. one of my dogs had found the dish and the banging was his tongue licking up the spatters of sauce on the plate he had reached stretching on his hind legs.

Another moment tonight was listening to the brief impromptu concert my wife gave on our organ. It just was another moment I did not expect or plan but enjoyed.

I liked a quote from a song by Joni Mitchell: ‘people hurry by so quickly, don’t they hear the melodies.’(Songs To Aging Children Come.)

Anyway, thanks for your column. Siggy

Hi Keith.
You’re welcome. Toastmasters… not much else to tell unfortunately. After 3 speeches into the program I moved and stopped going. Did enjoy my time with them though. Met some neat people. I appreciated how supportive they were of members in the group. There was a healthy mix of seasoned speakers and newcomers.

Hi Siggy.
Welcome; thanks for your comment. I’m guessing there was meat in that spaghetti sauce? :-) Lucky pooch. Those unexpected moments are the best. No time to do anything but let them flow.
