This Moment In Time Is When
After repeated attempts at writing daily over the last couple of weeks, I’ve come up empty.
Short of my last post that was a revised version of a 15-year-old journal entry, I have nothing to write about.
So, I’m gonna just sit here for a while and remember what writing feels like.
I remember that thrill I feel when the words flow and the expressions illustrate the magic that is as surreal as sitting under a starry sky.
When the mind, body and spirit become part of something much larger than just I.
When a shiver trickles across my chest and down my arms, yet I feel warmth.
When the grass is covered with dew, the ground is damp and the night air is crisp on my cheeks, yet I feel comfortable.
When it feels like the Earth has stopped spinning and time is standing still.
When it feels like my breath is breathing me; not the other way around.
When fireflies flicker through the mist in a rhythmic, pulsing dance of courtship.
When I listen to the chirping of the frogs and crickets and don’t have to understand.
When my eyes scan the indigo sky for a glimpse of a shooting star, hanging on every second.
When I don’t feel separate from more than just I.
When I wish this moment in time would last forever.
Because, dammit… this slump, this writer’s block, this whatever it is… is one moment that I don’t want to last forever!

Writer’s block or no, this was still a worthwhile journey to take, Davina. I was especially enamoured of this phrase:
“When it feels like my breath is breathing me; not the other way around.”
Expressed so simply, yet mysterious in its meaning. :)

One thing about creativity — you can’t force it. Instead, do something completely different. A research project, a trip, cleaning out a closet, visiting someone you haven’t seen in a long time — anything out of the ordinary. Maybe that will help.

lol. I can feel your pain, Davina. This sort of thing happens to me too. It’s not that I don’t have anything to write about, but because I just don’t have the impetus to put my fingers on the keyboard. Anyway, it’s my first time here and I just want to tell you that the things you’ve written here are really nice… not to mention that your last sentence cracks me up. Just remember that it can’t rain all the time. Have a great day!
Peace and respect,
Ryhen

I certainly know the feeling and the frustration. I agree with Dot… and perhaps doing something different will stir up something creative.

Very cool descriptions. I love the vivid imagery and passion you display. There’s nothing like those times when you feel connected to that grand scheme intertwining all of humankind, and the whole world just seems to brim with possibility. I want to go back to that place. Thanks for the very cool blog post.

Only you, Davina, could make something exquisite out of writer’s block! What a treat this was to read!

Davina,
Amazing writing and creativity. If this is what comes from being stuck, “Bring It On!”

Beautiful! I knew you’d turn this phase around. I share the solace you find in the “not feeling separate from the more than just I” and I usually get mine when I log off and quietly watch nature, too. You’re such a talented writer, Davina, folk come here for your expression of being, the way you filter life, not just your doing and your wisdom. So as long as you’re experiencing life, you’ll always be able to captivate us. My favourite line was the one about being breathed. When I’m writing, I always feel like that, too.

You call THIS writer’s block? OMG, what you’ve shared is beautiful. Even without writers block, I can’t touch your eloquence with words.
You rock!

Thank you EVERYBODY for your comments. You’ve really made my day! :-)
I’ll be back a bit later to answer each of your comments. For now, I’m in the middle of a huge project that is keeping me preoccupied.
Such a creative way to handle writer’s block!
As usual, a great picture. This is a beautifully written post.
You are a very talented writer. I guess you have to step away for awhile.
Your writers block should pass soon. You have my support.
Hi Tony.
I figured I’d make the effort to give the whining a little sugar. Kind of a compromise between repressing it and filtering it. You gotta love mysterious :-)
Hi Dot.
Isn’t THAT the truth! — You can’t force creativity. Thanks for your suggestions. Writing this post was out of the ordinary and it certainly got things started. Plus my wee brother paid me a friendly visit tonight.
Hi Ryhen.
Welcome, and thanks for your comment. It’s always nice to see a new face here. So, what do you do when you aren’t inspired to write and you’re frustrated by that? I’ve found that last lines such as the one that cracked you up can shake things up a bit, don’t you?
Hi Mike.
This post was a shot in the dark. You know what’s interesting is that by accentuating the writer’s block… by giving it a name and tossing it around… somehow that stirs things up. Who’d have thought?
Hi Ben.
You’re welcome and thanks for stopping by. You must be a poet, because you express yourself very poetically. I love it! I have a passion for nature and it’s easy to draw upon that, thankfully.
Hi Betsy.
Thank you for saying so. :-) I’m glad you enjoyed the treat.
Hi Tess.
“Bring IT on!” Yeah… that’s a Bold Statement and very well said by you :D
Hi Janice.
Your comment made me tear up, you know that? Thank you for this. Logging off and experiencing nature is such a blessing; there’s always something to appreciate about it. I think we can become so entranced by writer’s block and trying to fight it. Makes me think of quicksand; the more you struggle and resist, the deeper you sink — not that I’ve been in quicksand, mind you :-)
Hi Barbara.
Hah hah… thank you! And thank you for your tweet today. We just rocked writer’s block. :)
Hi Vered.
And it worked too! This time… ;-)
Hi Jim.
Thank you. That picture holds many memories… minus the backpack, mind you. Resisting the stepping away is often the double bind to writer’s block… I’ve found. Thanks for your support.
Hi Davina .. that was beautiful .. so resonateful with wise words about so many phases of our daily life .. just thoughts and wonder. Bringing forth ideas that gel and come easily I am absolutely certain are there .. and they’ll be teased out .. Spring is coming .. life is changing and burgeoning and I’m sure your posts will. Thinking of you .. and hope the big project is coming along smoothly … Hilary

You make me smile Davina. And you’re a sly one! Turning your block into poetry. It reminds me of a story from the book “Art and Fear.” Have you heard it? On the first day of ceramics class the instructor divides the class in two; one half is told they will be graded on the one perfect pot they create; the other half graded on the sheer amount of work done. No surprise, the greatest art came from the students who just kept churning out the work, even when they didn’t feel like it. Just like you. So wise! Thanks for this.

Dear Lady Davina… poets breathe their poetry. Sometimes the air is heavy, is all. I think for you, words seem like the air itself… so maybe change your venue for a few minutes. Or a day. Maybe Dot got it just right. :)
I’ll check back, ’cause I don’t believe for a minute you’ve run dry. :)

I love how you turned your writer’s block on its head and let poetry pour out of you. Each line is inspired and beautiful. Thank you.
I think I’m going to have to look at my writing differently after reading this. No wonder you want to get back to something so wonderful and wonderfully described.

Hi Hilary.
Thank you. The big project was just finished today. :-) It feels like Friday night; I’m all confused and feeling celebratory. Spring was in the air today… fleece jackets have been replaced with jean jackets and the air has a strong sweet aroma of blossoms. Wonderful!
Hi Patty.
No, I haven’t heard about “Art and Fear” and I’m glad you shared — that’s an interesting experiment. Because they didn’t hold anything back they were more successful. Really cool. Thanks! Even more reason to set aside some time every day to just write.
Hi Barb.
You are right… words mean a great deal. I suppose words are to a writer what paints are to an artist. Would you agree? “Lady Davina” :-)
Hi Belinda.
You’re welcome. And yeah… take THAT writer’s block! :-D
Hi Lori.
What a feeling eh? You know… now that I think about it, this was about stepping out of the head and just writing *with* the emotions. The words followed suit. Thanks :)
I couldn’t have done it better than you. You have an amazing way to turn that writer’s block around. I was only able to stare blankly and nothing seems to flow through.
.-= BK´s last blog ..Rebuild Haiti Better World Book Drive =-.
Hi BK.
You know what? When that happens, try writing about what excites you. Forget about what you’re trying to write about and just write about what you like or what inspires you; nature, a memory, a friend. Think of something like that and write about how it affects you. Maybe that will open the door for you.
Sweet!
Now try this with acupuncture needles in your ear….I can barely type! :)
dare you, dare you….

Hi Patricia.
So the needles are having that effect? I’ve had acupuncture a couple of times but never noticed anything. I hope you are feeling better now and have allowed yourself some time to rest.
Not to worry. You are just incubating for your next burst of creative output. And this post is absolutely gorgeous! It’s POETRY!
My best wishes to you for the quickening, which will come if you don’t worry too much about it.
Reading some of the above comments, I too would recommend “Art and Fear.” But I also recommend “Women Who Run With the Wolves,” which has been around for awhile. For me, it’s been very inspirational and empowering. There’s a lot of meaning to be found in her passionate lexicon and the stories she presents.

Proving to the writing universe yet again that the searched- for muse not only appears, but in a storm of golden passion and a whisper of grandeur in a molecule of time.
Beautiful, Davina!! You should get blocked more often! :)
xo
Hi Lynda.
Gee thanks :) A sure fire way to rumble through writer’s block is to write about nature, I’ve always found. I’ve heard of “Women Who Run With the Wolves” before; it’s an intriguing title. Thanks for the recommendation.
Hi Jannie.
“…in a storm of golden passion and a whisper of grandeur in a molecule of time.” Ooooh. I love this! Thanks.
