Oh, Nothing

by Davina on July 18, 2010

“One creates from nothing.
If you try to create from something you’re just changing something.
So in order to create something you first have to be able to create nothing. ” ~ Werner Erhard

Sometimes it’s better to say nothing because it means something to everyone.

Nothing.

A space waiting to be filled.

With whatever you want to put into it.

Nothing waits.

It will take whatever you give it.

It will give you everything, if you let it.

It renders me now.

Sitting on the edge of a mountain, looking back at the view from where I have come.

It lifts me higher without having to take another step.

If I close my eyes I see everything, still.

And nothing.

Nothing takes me everywhere.

Nothing really is something, isn’t it?

What do you make of nothing?

Dear blogging buddies… I need to take some space.

Going to stay here for a while and admire the view. Isn’t it breathtaking? :-)

Be back soon.

Hi Davina .. I’ll sit with you .. and admire the view .. enjoy your space – filled with nothing, filled with love, filled with enthusiasm for the freshness of summer, fuelled with peace for the soul .. with thoughts and a hug or two .. Hilary

Davina:

The view is magnificent and welcoming. Happy hours there.

As for nothing, I think I have my own arguments. Well, if there is nothing, then one has to create it and that means you become the Supreme power. I don’t think anyone has that kind of power. It’s like playing god! And I also think that it is impossible to empty anything be it the mind or past. It seems plausible but no.

Hope I made some sense. Would like to hear your thoughts :)

Have a fulfilling week ahead!

Joy always,
Susan

Davina, that’s the kind of view that almost steals my mind away. Look at those clouds, filling an endless sky with all sorts of possibilities. How can I refuse?

And I agree that nothing is not nothing. As soon as it has a name, then it must surely be something, right? :)

Julie July 18, 2010 at 5:29 am

Davina, this is a beautiful explanation of the benefits of meditation, meditation can be a momentary exercise in refilling the well or an extended act of living, of just being. When I empty, and fill my Self with nothing, it’s a glorious floating freeing feeling! It’s as you say, lifting me “higher without having to take another step.” It’s like as you climb that mountain for your view, you’re sloughing off bits and pieces that are no longer necessary so when you arrive at the top (at nothing) you’re free and clean and ready to receive new goodness to use and enjoy. Go enjoy, Davina! :)

Hi Davina – I love this. It is so true that you can make absolutely anything out of nothing.

I hope your time off is productive – I can’t wait to see your new branding.

Hi Davina,

If “nothing” exists then it is “something”
Nothing is just a classification of something so we can understand it
The origin point, the starting point, from nothing to something
Elevating, creation, or simply going up
Then the opposite, from something to nothing, degradation, reduction

Got to love flowing from nothing to something :)

Hi Davina,

This reminds me of when I’m thinking and someone asks me,”What are you thinking?” and I answer, “Nothing”. It’s not that not thinking something, but that I haven’t, or aren’t ready to put a name to it.

I also remember an old saying, “Don’t make something out of nothing.”

Enjoy the view from where you’re at. I’ll be patiently waiting for your return. ((hugs)).

Enjoy your time off! It’s good that you recognize the need.

Davina July 18, 2010 at 4:56 pm

Hilary,
Okay, there’s a spot right here for you. I’ll gladly share the space :)

Susan,
Thanks. Hey, we’re each entitled to our opinions and I can surely respect yours :) My thoughts? I don’t believe in a god that is separate from us or that this is about power, per se. The perspective I was illustrating through this writing is that nothing is about surrendering to the space and not trying to define it. Just witnessing it.

Tony,
Isn’t it incredible? This was taken just before sunset a couple of weeks ago. Have never seen a cloud like this before. Your comment made me realize that it’s like with “nothing” there is nothing set in stone. It’s not about being one thing; something or nothing. It’s not to be contained or named. Even a donut hole doesn’t hang out for too long ;-) My head hurts :-P

Julie,
Your words always take me on a beautiful trip :-) Your comment about sloughing off bits and pieces brought some interesting images up: I’m visualizing how a balloon can rise higher when there is nothing tied to it.

Cath,
Thanks :-) You CAN make absolutely anything out of nothing. lol.

Raul,
Your comment was something. I have nothing to add :-)

Barbara,
Cool. Not putting a name to it. Yes! I love it. I think people could “argue” this forever, couldn’t they? Raul is onto something regarding the FLOW and the different levels. And what you say is so true… making assumptions is the ultimate form of making something out of nothing. Thx for the hugs. Back to you. :)

Vered,
Thank you.

That’s an interesting quote. Very true in today’s distracting time and difficult for kids to understand as they grow up. The addiction to constant adrenalin producing events makes it tough to think clearly towards a goal. Enjoy your space.

Sometimes it does seem like things are spinning faster than I want or need them too… so I am going to take a break to do nothing but nap next, which usually results in my ability to do something better later than I would do if I did something right now.

Beautiful picture, Davina…

Nothing is definitely the new something. A quiet time to fill with a poem such as this. To reflect on a mountain. To breathe in the wonders of nature.

Enjoy the mountain. And space.

Patricia July 20, 2010 at 8:46 pm

I just had my supper on the deck and then let two hours pass just watching the birds, clouds over the mountain and the wind move the trees – something and nothing…

enjoy your space….nothing matters…

Davina July 20, 2010 at 11:13 pm

JD,
Me too. White space is a good thing… leaves room to step outside of the box.

Tess,
We can get pretty attached to these computers of ours. I can’t even remember what it was like before we had them. They’re pretty easy to unplug from though if you don’t take them on vacation. Don’t you find? Thanks… I will miss everyone too. I already do…as the Google Reader begins to fill up.

Patricia,
You must be SO relaxed now. And, your food WELL digested, I bet. What a luxury these days, to just sit and admire the view. “Nothing matters” :-D

Walter July 22, 2010 at 12:25 am

I cherish every moment when nothing enters my mind. In such instances I’m able to see everything. If I could only summon nothingness, I will discover many things. :-)

Davina,

Good for you to sit and admire the view…it is a lovely view and picture.

Hi Davina — that strikes me as a great personal opportunity — maybe I’ll try it myself — just putting out on my blog “I’ve got nothing to say today,” and being with the feelings that come up around having made that offering. You do a lot of courageous stuff here, I think!

Davina July 26, 2010 at 11:08 am

Chris,
Hi there. Thanks! :-) It’s been a fight to allow this “nothing” to be. I’m enjoying the break… it actually took a week just to get “it” out of my system. Now all systems are “go forward” with the rest… See you soon, though.

Jim July 26, 2010 at 9:54 pm

Is nothing equal to something?
Did the chicken come first or the egg?
Maybe it’s all about how you define nothing.
For me, I would be in a very relaxed state admiring Mother Nature, with my worries gone
Like when we just went up MT. SEYMOUR. When all the noisy people left, we just relaxed in a meadow up the mountain. Finally relaxing peace and quiet.
I almost feel asleep, but the thought of waking up with a bear looking at me spoiled the moment. If I have one tenth of my father’s toughness, the bear would be in trouble.
Actually the chicken came first.

Jannie Funster July 26, 2010 at 10:31 pm

My Dearest Davina, it pained me so that your sidebar button recently reached spot 21, then dropped off.

As my new Peeps buttons appear up top, then rotate down as each new one alights, my heart wishes they could remain in all eternity.

But in a way, they will! In my 21 recap posts. Capiche? :)

My new song, twiddling the second verse. Still. What is it with me???

Sail a child with all that’s good and true.
Sail her from the harbor deep in you. (Like that new line!)
Hold her close if she should cry.
Catch her dreams and make them fly.

Not so sure now about lines 3 & 4.

The crying line seems a bit lame.

Catch her dreams and see them fly.
way into the _________ sky.

?

But I shan’t fret.

The truth shall alight.

:)

Davina July 27, 2010 at 10:21 am

Jim,
I say yes, nothing is something and something can be nothing. What a play on words, eh? All about concept and as you say it’s all about how you define nothing.

I like pondering these kinds of things. There are different concepts and there is the relationship between nothing and something, and the grey areas in between as you move from one to the other.

I’m glad you didn’t mention bears while we were up that mountain. I’d not considered them at all.

Jannie,
I think it’s great that you’ve set up the buttons to rotate. I noticed mine had move away — that’s okay :-)

Hey, thanks for sharing this verse here. I don’t think the “cry” is too lame. I LOVE the new line! Had a run at lines 3 and 4, trying to keep the sailing metaphor going…

Sail a child with all that’s good and true.
Sail her from the harbor deep in you.
Catch her dreams with but one sigh,
Your arms anchored, where she lies.

Maybe that will sail you in the right direction :-) I considered trying to indicate the sigh being related to the wind in the sails, but gave up, lol.

Jannie Funster July 27, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Ahhhh, good thinking. I just love how people come up with such different creative ideas. Thanks for your appreciated input!

Take her gently by the hand.
Let her be whatever she can.

??

:)

I’d like to get across the idea, too, to accept her for who she is, how it’s important to not put my dreams on her, but to support her own.

Ahhh, so many ideas to choose from and run with. :)

Awesome!!

Oh, I love it, Jannie!

I’m honoured that you chose to render this here :-)

“Take her gently by the hand.
Let her be whatever she can.”

Beautiful.

Jannie Funster July 27, 2010 at 2:33 pm

And….

watch her waving from the deck
til she becomes a distant speck.

??

That might be good to fit in somewhere. Can even change up verse orders.

I dunno, just noodling as I heated up a hotdog, a few minutes ago.

Kelly and both showered and raring to go. Back to gymnastics today, whoo – hoo.

Jannie,
This is too cute! :-) It would be a neat experiment to switch the verses around or even some of the lines, and see what evolves. I’m loving watching this process, Jannie. And the hot dog… with mustard?

Kelly is back to gymnastics for the first time after getting her cast off? She must be thrilled! And you too… somewhere for her to let go of all the energy that’s been building up, lol.

Liara Covert July 31, 2010 at 4:44 pm

As one grows aware of voice, one begins to sense one is not the voice, not the judge of what is being perceived, not the thinker, but the essence of being behind the voice which is aware, still and free to be.
.-= Liara Covert´s last blog ..When do you avoid what is =-.

Davina July 31, 2010 at 10:39 pm

Liara,
Ahh, interesting. We are the being *behind* the voice! I thought it was the other way around; we surrendered to the voice. Much greater than I would have imagined. I hadn’t considered this perspective.
